Here’s an admission – I am not an Apple fan. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate its products. If I have to pick the best Apple product out there, it will be the iPad. I like it for a few crucial reasons. Firstly, being productive on a smartphone other than a BlackBerry is just being counter-productive. I am yet to find a suitable laptop for my taste. In such a scenario, a tablet serves me well. I like the Microsoft Surface Pro hybrid as well, but not as much as the iPad. The reason why I am talking about the iPad today is simple – the 2018 Apple iPad Pro is out. In its second iteration, is it a better foil for the Surface Pro? Simply put, should you consider it?

What’s new about the 2018 Apple iPad Pro?
Quite a bit is new about the 2018 Apple iPad Pro. I will start with a few absences vis-à-vis the old iPad Pro – the sides are now flat, there is no headphone jack, and the Lighting port is gone. Importantly, it seems the only devices to now retain Touch ID are MacBook Pro and new MacBook Air. Gone for good are the huge forehead and chin. The last big absence on the 2018 Apple iPad Pro is the (curious) lack of OLED display panel.
Suffice to say, there’s quite a bit new with the new iPad Pro. Starting with its body, the device has refined design. The front features narrow bezels around the display. The sides are flat and the rear has a camera bump now. Crucially, the device now features a USB Type-C port (only iPhones left now). Before moving to internals, two more aspects need to be addressed. The first is the display.
The 2018 Apple iPad Pro has an LCD panel that it maker calls Liquid Retina display. Importantly, it is the same display as the iPhone XR. Despite it being an LCD panel, it looks great and balances the bezels around itself quite well. The second is the removal of Touch ID in favor of Face ID. More importantly, Apple says Face ID works in either portrait or landscape orientation (which is nice).
Moving to its internals, the new iPad Pro has Apple’s A12X Bionic chip with Neural engine and embedded M12 co-processor. It comes in two display sizes – 12.9-inch and 11-inch. Interestingly, that’s just the only difference between the two 2018 Apple iPad Pro models. Storage options on offer are 64GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The device packs a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with f/1.8 aperture and no OIS (absences continue along with that camera bump).
The new Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil accessories also have some tricks up their respective sleeves. The former acts as a front and rear panel guard and has two tablet tilt positions to offer. The latter now sticks magnetically to the iPad Pro to charge itself (no charging via USB-C) and can be double-tapped to select different tools in apps. The 2018 Apple iPad Pro retains its predecessor’s four-speaker system. Only two finishes are available for the device – Silver and Space Grey.
Is the 2018 Apple iPad Pro worth consideration?
If you can ignore its price or afford it, the 2018 Apple iPad Pro is worth buying. I say this because I used to own the iPad 2 a few years ago. I parted from it over four years later when it slowed down considerably. If I have money to spare on a device today, the 2018 Apple iPad Pro will be among my top two overall purchase priorities.
It may have been the top priority but Apple (like Microsoft) wants to charge extra for that keyboard folio. Considering I do a lot of writing, I’ll much rather pay for the entire package than two products separately. Or I’ll get a third-party wireless keyboard at a much cheaper rate. Gripe sorted! Time to now save enough cash to get one soon!
