Asus makes many products today. However, at its core, it is a PC maker before anything else. Setting that ground is necessary as the company makes some good smartphones like the ZenFone 5Z and the ZenFone Max Pro M1, which can cause confusion about its primary competency. Speaking of primary competencies, the company showcased a nifty product early this year. It caught everyone’s eye as it had its track pad double up as a second screen. This product is called the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE and it competes directly against the Touch bar-equipped Apple MacBook Pro. What makes Asus think that this laptop can go head-to-head against such a tough competitor? Time to find out, it seems.

What’s new about the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE?
Like mentioned earlier, the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE competes against the Touch bar-equipped Apple MacBook Pro. To go up against such a tough competitor, the Asus laptop here has some tricks up its sleeve. The laptop’s shell is made out of aluminium and has been finished in Deep Dive Blue colour scheme. There is Rose Gold surround around the lower half of the ZenBook UX580GE. Buyers will also get to see keyboard and Asus logo on the laptop both backlit in gold.
The real party trick of the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE is the ScreenPad. To the uninitiated, that is just a fancy name given to the touchpad of this laptop. However, its implementation is much closer to a combination of a traditional touchpad and Apple’s Touch bar. The ScreenPad can double up as a second screen to the laptop. One can use it to keep an eye on e-mails or their social media accounts (just an example). Moreover, the ScreenPad has its own dedicated set of apps ranging from a calculator to a music player.
The ScreenPad isn’t the only thing special about the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE. The laptop gets two processor options – a 2.2GHz hexa-core eighth-gen Intel Core i7 or a 2.9GHz hexa-core Core i9 processor. These processors have been paired with a 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU. There is 16GB RAM on offer as well as a 1TB SSD internal storage space.
The Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE gets a 15.6-inch LED touchscreen display with 4K UHD (3840x2160p) resolution, and 16:9 aspect ratio. It has 7.3mm thick bezels and a screen-to-body ratio of 83 per cent. It runs on Windows 10 Home, though Asus recommends Windows 10 Pro. Not to forget, the backlit keyboard does not have a number pad and its keys have 1.5mm travel. The ScreenPad measures 5.5 inches across, has Full HD (1920x1080p) resolution, and supports up to four-finger smart gestures.
For security purposes, the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE has a fingerprint scanner. The laptop has Harman Kardon-certified Asus SonicMaster stereo speaker system. It has a VGA webcam and connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 5.0, two USB-C and USB -A 3.1 ports each, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI port.
The ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE has a 71Whr battery that provides up to 9.5 hours of use on a single charge. With the included 150W charger, the laptop can charge up to 60 per cent within 49 minutes. The laptop measures 365mm x 251mm x 18.9mm and weighs 1.89kg. Asus includes a USB-LAN port dongle in the laptop’s package, along with some add-on software (some exclusively for ScreenPad).
Is the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE worth consideration?
This laptop is definitely worth consideration. Asus laptops have great build quality, and fit-and-finish. Among the Windows-based laptops, it is among the best ones for use by business folks and professionals across industries. Its design and styling has a touch of uniqueness to it that is not easily seen this side of a MacBook Pro.
The Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580GE is not going to be inexpensive. After all, anything going up against the MacBook Pro cannot be affordable for the masses. That does not mean it has to have compromises either. That is what the ZenBook Pro 15 represents. For that reason, buyers should give this laptop a long and hard thought when shopping for a new portable PC.
