First there were smartphone displays with big bezels. Next came small bezels for a minimalistic look up front. Then the iPhone popularised notched displays. Today, there are two devices that are making notched displays look and feel outdated. One of them is the Oppo Find X. The other is our topic of discussion today – the Vivo Nex. Originally called the Nex S, its name has been shortened for reasons only Vivo knows. It has been launched in India for Rs 44,990 and will go on sale on Amazon India on Saturday, July 21. However, buyers can pre-book the device on Amazon India and Vivo’s official website. Will it be a phone worth consideration for that price?

What’s new about the Vivo Nex?
The Vivo Nex looks similar to the Oppo Find X. The front panel has a small, narrow chin and is not completely covered by display. However, its rear carries a mirror finish quite close to HTC’s Liquid Surface finish and reflects different shades of light at different angles.
Unlike the Oppo Find X, the Vivo Nex has a dual rear-camera setup mounted on the rear panel. Its front camera is hidden inside the phone and slides out when needed. This helps it look like other smartphones on the market but distinct in its own subtle way. Also, unlike the Find X which makes use of facial recognition, the Vivo Nex has an in-display fingerprint reader.
The Vivo Nex gives no ground to Oppo Find X in hardware department. It has a 2.8GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip with Adreno 630 GPU. It has 8GB RAM and is offered with 128GB internal storage option only. Moreover, the internal storage cannot be expanded (like Find X). It has a Ultra FullView Super AMOLED display onboard that measures 6.59 inches across with Full HD+ (2316x1080p) resolution and 19.3:9 aspect ratio. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 UI.
The Vivo Nex’s rear camera setup consists of a 12-megapixel primary lens (f/1.8 aperture and OIS) and a 5-megapixel secondary lens (f/2.4 aperture, depth-sensing). The front camera on the phone has an 8-megapixel lens (f/2.0 aperture). Connectivity features on the phone include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/A-GPS/GLONASS, dual-SIM with dual-standby, and USB Type-C 2.0.
The Nex is powered by a 4000mAh battery that supports fast charging. It measures 162mm x 77mm x 7.98mm and weighs 199 grams (made of glass and metal). In the box, owners will get the Vivo Nex smartphone, charging cable + adapter, SIM ejector tool, earphones, protective case, and user manual.
Is the Vivo Nex worth consideration?
The Vivo Nex is considered in the same vein as the Oppo Find X. Naturally, the pros and cons of both phones will weigh into the final decision. Some pros when considering the Vivo Nex are presence of a fingerprint reader, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the big 4000mAh battery, The cons working against this smartphone are only 128GB internal storage option, no internal storage expansion option, and it does not look as premium as Find X.
Pros and cons apart, if there are any concerns about the Vivo Nex’s durability, this video should quell them*. In terms of its value-for-money factor, the Vivo Nex is unmatched (enhanced by the fact that one-time screen replacement is being offered free of cost). It will likely eat into the market share of devices like the Galaxy S9 and OnePlus 6 too. It is near impossible, despite its flaws, to not consider buying the Vivo Nex upon its launch in India.
