Oppo is one of the biggest smartphone makers in the world. But it has not had a device that could take on the iPhones and Samsungs of the world, until now. The Oppo Find X is the company’s 2018 flagship smartphone and its most ambitious product to date. Now it is available in India for a price of Rs 59,900. Preorders for the phone will commence on July 25 with deliveries beginning from August 3. One thing to note here is that only one variant is coming to India. Can the Find X justify its price tag?

What’s new about the Oppo Find X?
Oppo Find X is among the
few two smartphones in the world (currently) that have their front panel almost entirely dedicated to display (no, the Mi Mix or its successor don’t count). The other phone to go this route is the Vivo Nex S, but we digress. This phone is quite beautiful to look at. The phone carries Gradient Design (per Oppo) design language. It sure sounds like HTC’s Liquid Surface design, however the colours are less shifty in this application. Going by photos, the phone will reflect the same colour at different lighting angles.
The phone’s hardware consists of an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip with Adreno 630 GPU. It packs 8GB RAM and comes in two internal storage options – 128GB and 256GB – both of which do not have expansion option and are available in Bordeaux Red and Glacier Blue colour schemes. Of these variants only the 256GB storage option comes to India but can be had in either colour. The AMOLED display on the Oppo Find X measures 6.42 inches across and has Full HD+ (2340x1080p) resolution with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The display is slightly curved on the sides, like the Galaxy Note 8. The phone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with ColorOS 5.1 UI skin on top.
The phone gets a dual rear-camera setup with a 16-megapixel primary lens that has f/2.0 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization. The secondary lens is a 20-megapixel unit that has f/2.2 aperture. The front-facing camera gets a 25-megapixel lens with f/2.0 aperture with AI features. Connectivity options on the phone include Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, USB Type-C, and Wifi 802.11 ac. The phone gets a 3730mAh battery with Oppo’s proprietary VOOC fast charging technology. The device measures 156.7mm x 74.3mm x 9.4mm (l x b x h) and weighs 186 grams.
Is the Oppo Find X worth consideration?
Consider the following points and the answer will be quite apparent. The phone’s cameras (both front and rear) are hidden in a slide-out panel. The phone does not have a fingerprint scanner. To unlock the phone, its screen needs to be awoken and a slide up gesture on the screen needs to be performed. This makes the camera slider slide up and scan the user’s face to authorize phone access. The slide-out module has a flood illuminator, IR camera, ranging sensor, a dot projector, and the cameras.
In case the phone feels a bit fragile*, here’s a number from Oppo – 3,00,000+. This is the number of times the phone has been tested for its durability. It could not take any chances with a device with 93.8 per cent screen-to-body ratio now, could it? Too bad it does not have a microSD card reader. Minor compromises apart, this is one head-turning phone. The real question now is, how many will buy it?
