The DBS Superleggera is Aston Martin’s flagship car. It takes the DB11 formula and turns it up to 11 with more power and less weight. But do those facts justify its lofty price tag?

Aston Martin – for many, these two terms define a quintessential British brand. This brand makes some of the most desirable cars in the world. This brand, unlike its sporty competitors in Woking and Maranello, doesn’t make high-precision corner-carving machines (though it still has made one). Nor is the brand into making ultra-luxury cars (liks this). Aston Martin’s niche is making vehicles that can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime and not just around a track or at limit. This is why the DBS Superleggera is such a landmark product. It costs over US $3,00,000 (approx Rs 2.06 crore at current exchange rate) and is the company’s flagship (for now). What’s new about the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera?

The DBS Superleggera is based on the DB11 but still is a totally different product. This makes choosing what to talk about first difficult. Let’s touch upon its looks first. It shares its design with the DB11. That breath-taking design seems to somehow look better with every glance at the car. Any car, no matter how beautiful, is likely to pale in comparison when parked next to it. Aston did right by not tweaking with the design. It did swap out the metal body panels for carbon-fibre ones, making the car 72kg lighter than DB11.


Different styling elements have been used to separate the DBS Superleggera from the DB11. Up front, there is a hexagonal honeycomb mesh grille (reminds one of the new Vantage) and restyled front bumper (with a splitter and two air dams). There is Superleggera badging on the outer side of bonnet vents. The sides feature new alloy wheels, DBS badges, and longer side louvres. The rear gets a double diffuser, quad exhaust pipes, and Aeroblade II.


The interior retains its dual-tone scheme. However, black is the dominant theme and there is contrast stitching on seats, door trims, and other upholstered bits. The seat backs have embossed Aston Martin wing logo. The leather of seats has dual-tone finish with the side bolsters and centre portion of headrest sporting textured leather. For those who already own the DB11, this interior is a friendly space with enough freshness to feel different.


The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is powered by a DOHC, 48-valve, all alloy engine with 5.2-litre displacement and twin-turbocharging. It has 9.5:1 compression ratio and makes use of tricks like water-to-air charge cooling, dual variable cam timing, and knock-sensing. The result of all this is 725HP (or 715 BHP) power and 900Nm (or 663 lb ft) torque that is sent to rear wheels via a rear-mounted 8-speed automatic gearbox from ZF. This transaxle arrangement makes use of an alloy torque tube and a carbon fibre propeller shaft (it guarantees that gearbox can take all that monstrous power).


An independent double wishbone suspension setup at the front is paired with a multi-link setup at the rear of Aston Martin DBS Superleggera. The car is equipped with adaptive dampers at all ends that have Skyhook technology and offer three modes – GT, Sport, and Sport Plus. The front brake discs on this car measure a massive 410mm while the rear ones measure 360mm.


The 21-inch wheels have staggered arrangement (265/35 front; 305/30 rear) and are shod with Pirelli P Zero tires. This car goes from 0-100kmph in just 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of over 335kmph (211mph). The DBS Superleggera measures a massive 4712mm in length, 2146mm in width, 1280mm in height and its wheelbase spans 2805mm (38mm shorter, 86mm wider, and 10mm dwarfer).

Is the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera worth consideration?

Got money? Then it is worth every penny. For bragging rights’ sake, it is the most powerful production Aston Martin till date. 0-100kmph in just 3.4 seconds for a car that weighs 1693kg dry (3732 pounds for those Stateside) and a top speed of over 320kmph (200mph+) are some crazy numbers for a two-door 2+2 GT. Plus, cylinder deactivation tech makes it slightly less of gas-guzzler. It has the bark to match its bite too. It can achieve those feats while looking like a million bucks. How many cars can achieve those two tasks?


Having that V12 under the hood means it can do high-speed cruising all day long and never feel tired or unrefined. Its interior is as exquisite as its exterior. Q by Aston Martin ensures that each user can further personalize his/her Aston Martin DBS Superleggera to their liking. There are a few compromises with the car like the absence of Android Auto integration, the Aston Martin tracking feature is available in selective markets only, and the car is so wide that owners will have tough time driving it around in traffic, especially in India.


But those compromises are nothing out of ordinary for a car that look so great and goes so fast. The DBS Superleggera justifies its price tag by existing in a plane consisting of cars like the 2019 Bentley Continental GT , and not living by their rules. This is what its buyers will pay for and they will be happy to do so, for the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is no ordinary car. Everything about it, including its price tag, has to convey that feeling of specialty. It does feel more than special. It feels extraordinary.
