For Toyota Yaris, safety is the top priority

Toyota Yaris challenges the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Ciaz. In doing so, it prioritizes safety above everything else. Will that approach help it achieve success?

After much fanfare, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (aka Toyota India) finally brought the Yaris sedan to India. This car slots between the Etios and Corolla Altis sedans in the company’s India line-up. The Yaris’ chief rivals are Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The car’s prices start from Rs 8.75 lakh, going up to Rs 14.07 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). Interestingly, there is no diesel engine on offer on the Yaris and it is costlier than all its rivals. Has Toyota given it the goods to justify its price premium over its rivals? And why no diesel?

What’s new about the Toyota Yaris?

The Yaris that comes to India is a third-generation car (XP150 model) and is sold in countries like Thailand and Indonesia as Yaris ATIV. The car’s design gives it a modern, slightly-edgy look. However, unlike the Corolla Altis, its appearance is restrained. The bonnet creases render a sense of tautness to the design. The crease on the side, running from front doors to the rear doors, accentuate the car’s waistline. However, it also makes the car’s side widows look small in photos (at least the rear ones). This ends in a neat rear end which looks quite stylish. The A-pillar is not steeply-raked which should aid frontal visibility.


In terms of styling, the highlight up front is the big 7-slat grille that fills up almost the entire front bumper. It houses a body-coloured lip spoiler at the bottom, registration plate in the middle, and LED DRLs up top. On either side of the grille sit the fog lamp housings (with fog lamps) that somehow complement the grille. The swept-back projector headlamps flank a small grille and it houses the Toyota logo. On the side, the rear-view mirrors have body-coloured housings and integrated turn indicators. The 6 twin-spoke wheels (15-inch diameter), however, feel small.


No Android Auto/Apple Carplay/Mirror Link in touchscreen infotainment unit

The Yaris gets blacked-out B-pillar and chrome door handles but receives body-coloured A and C pillars. The rear features wraparound taillamps which have a nice and unique shape. They flank the Toyota logo in the middle, which sits atop the registration plate housing in the trunk lid. There are Yaris and trim badges sitting on the lower left and lower right sides of the registration plate housing, respectively. Finally, the rear bumper features four parking sensors and one reflector on either side. Toyota has opted for a downward-facing exhaust pipe with the Yaris.

On the inside, the Toyota Yaris gets a dual-tone black-beige colour scheme. The dashboard also gets this treatment and has been accentuated with piano black and brushed aluminium inserts around areas like the side A/c vents, steering wheel, centre console, and the gear shifter. A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system sits atop the centre console and it also has gesture control but does not seem to have either Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or Mirror Link functionalities. Behind the three-spoke steering wheel lies the instrument cluster with analogue readouts for engine speed and vehicle speed, and a digital display for readouts like clock, gear shift, odometer, and trip meters.


The Yaris comes packing a 1496cc naturally-aspirated four-cylinder dual VVT-i petrol engine that makes 107HP power and 140Nm torque. This engine is paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed (step) Super CVT-i automatic transmission. Toyota claims 17.1kmpl mileage for the manual gearbox-equipped Yaris, and a higher 17.8kmpl figure for the CVT-equipped car. The car has McPherson strut suspension up front and torsion beam setup at the rear. Toyota has equipped the car with disc/drum brake setup (for J and G variants) and disc brakes on all corners (V and VX variants). This car measures 4,425mm in length, 1,730mm in width, and 1,495mm in height, with wheelbase spanning 2,550mm.

Is the Toyota Yaris worth consideration?

Yes, it is worth your consideration for a few crucial reasons. First off, it offers some segment-first features like tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), front and rear parking sensors, roof-mounted A/c vents for rear seats, power-adjustable driver seat, and 60:40 split rear seats. For the rear seat occupants, there are dual rear power outlets, armrest with cupholders, and the rear sunshade. Toyota has equipped the car with what it calls HSEA (High Solar Energy Absorbing with Infrared cutoff) windshield, and acoustic and vibration control glass. On the safety front, the car gets 7 airbags, ABS, EBD, and Brake Assist as standard features.


The Yaris gets driver aids like cruise control, vehicle stability control, hill start assist control, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and reverse parking camera. For those opting for automatic gearbox-equipped models, they also benefit from steering-mounted paddle shifters. All in all, the Toyota Yaris offers some serious kit for its price. Yes, its price is a bit prohibitive. But even those opting for the lower trims get a car that is quite safe and well-equipped. Only the J variant misses out on roof-mounted (and illuminated) rear A/c vents. All variants get features like height-adjustable driver’s seat, 60:40 split rear seats, keyless entry, tilt adjustable steering (unfortunately, no adjustment for reach on any variant), electrically adjustable rear-view mirrors, and cooled glovebox.


The Yaris may not be bargain, but it is one nice package to opt for. Yes, there is no diesel on offer but that’s understandable. When diesel ban was imposed in Delhi-NCR, Toyota was among the worst-hit automakers. It does not want to see such a day again and is exercising caution in this regard. Who knows a diesel engine may be offered on Yaris in future? Plus, that Toyota badge should somewhat justify its price premium over its rivals. Do consider this when looking for sub-Rs 10 lakh sedan.
