Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is here and it looks great

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has finally come to India. However, it faces competition from the likes of OnePlus 5T and Nokia 8. Will it be able to hold its own against its rivals?

Xiaomi is among the few smartphone makers that are known for offering immense value-for-money products. However, the product this piece focuses on is unique as well. It is among the first few phones to have a screen fill up its front panel almost entirely. It is also among the few phones in the world to sport ceramic as one of its construction materials. This phone is the Mi MIX 2 and it comes to India for a price of Rs 32,999 (note – its price has been reduced to Rs 29,999). But can it take on the value-for-money heavyweights such as the OnePlus 5/5T and Nokia 8?

What’s new about the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2?

The first thing to know about the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is that it is the successor of the similarly unique Mi MIX. That phone was launched in 2016 but did not find its way to India. The Mi MIX had a 6.4-inch, 17:9 aspect ratio screen with Full HD (2040x1080p) resolution. The Mi MIX 2 has a smaller 5.99-inch Full HD+ (2160x1080p) resolution IPS LCD display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mi MIX 2 does away with Mi MIX’s piezoelectric speaker in favour of a traditional unit. It retains the ultrasonic proximity sensor that was on the Mi MIX. The phone runs on Android OS skinned with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI9 skin.

The Mi MIX 2 is powered by an octa-core 2.45GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor that is paired with Adreno 540 GPU and 6GB RAM. The phone has 128GB internal storage space but there is no microSD expansion option on offer. It has a 12-megapixel rear camera with 4-axis Optical Image Stabilisation, PDAF and f/2.0 aperture. The front camera on the phone is a 5-megapixel unit that has features like selfie countdown, mirror, beautification profiles, and video-calling with real-time beatification.

The Mi MIX 2 is a dual-SIM phone and offers connectivity options like 4G VoLTE, Wi-fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, MIMO, USB Type-C, NFC, and GPS/A-GPS/GLONASS/Beidou. The onboard sensors on the phone include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, ultrasonic proximity sensor, barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, and hall sensor. A 3,400mAh battery powers the Mi MIX 2 and it also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge technology for those quick top-offs on the move.

Is the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 worth consideration?

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is a unique phone, both in terms of its looks and features. The phone’s rear panel, as well as the power and volume buttons, are made of ceramic. Its rear camera is surrounded by 18-karat gold rim. While it loses out on its predecessor’s piezoelectric speaker, its traditional speaker has a small footprint and is almost invisible unless looked at closely.

It does not push the envelope as much as the Mi MIX did with its bezel-less display and the piezoelectric speaker. In comparison to Mi MIX, the Mi MIX 2 has lower internal storage space at 128GB (vs 256GB of Mi MIX). The rear camera of Mi MIX 2 is a 12-megapixel unit as opposed to the 16-megapixel unit on its predecessor. The battery of Mi MIX 2, at 3,400mAh, is smaller than Mi MIX’s 4,400mAh cell. It does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack like the Mi MIX did.

The Mi MIX 2 seems like a step back when compared to its predecessor, but that’s only half-true. The phone’s design seems more refined than before and that should aid it in the ergonomics’ department. The phone’s footprint is smaller than its predecessor to make its size manageable to users with small hands. The phone is slimmer than before and lighter too. The battery size has gone down but the display’s sharpness has gone up. In short, the Mi MIX 2 is as good as its predecessor, if not any better. That is no mean feat. Also, that is exactly makes this a phone worth consideration.
