Nokia 8 Sirocco is the phone you always look for!

HMD Global-owned Nokia has launched the Nokia 8 Sirocco in India. Positioned as the brand’s flagship device, is this smartphone a sign of things to come from the 3310 maker?

Nokia returned to the Indian market in 2017 amid much fanfare. The brand hoped to regain the popularity it had lost since its time under Microsoft’s umbrella. To that end, it even revealed the classic 3310 feature phone in the country. However, it realized the market had moved forward. This made it launch the Nokia 3, 5, 6, and 7 smartphones in the country. Nokia 8’s launch followed these smartphones and the phone took its place at the top of the company’s smartphone lineup. However, it was not enough for Nokia. Now, at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, the company has revealed a different Nokia 8 and it is called Nokia 8 Sirocco. This phone has been priced at Rs 49,999 in India. What is this phone all about? Will it help Nokia in its goal of regaining mass popularity?

What’s new about the Nokia 8 Sirocco?

Nokia 8 Sirocco replaces the Nokia 8 as the flagship smartphone in the brand’s lineup. It has a 5.5-inch QHD resolution display that is curved on both sides and has 16:9 aspect ratio. It is a pOLED panel and sports Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Nokia claims this phone has been made from a single piece of stainless steel. It measures 140.93mm x 72.97mm x 7.5mm (l x b x h).

The Nokia 8 Sirocco gets the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor that is clocked at 2.36GHz. It has been paired with 6GB RAM. The phone has 128GB internal storage space but offers no room for expansion. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is among the few single-SIM flagship smartphones in the country and runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-box. There is a dual-camera setup on the rear with a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens (f/1.7) paired with a 13-megapixel telephoto lens (f/2.6). The front camera is a 5-megapixel unit. The rear camera sports a dual-LED flash while the front camera gets display flash support.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco has 3 microphones and a single speaker with Smart Amp. The phone has 4G LTE, GPS/A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, NFC, ANT+, Wi-fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, G-sensor, E-compass, gyroscope, hall sensor, barometer, Bluetooth 5.0, ambient light sensor, and proximity sensor. The phone has a 3260mAh battery, and supports fast charging and Qi wireless charging.

Is the Nokia 8 Sirocco worth consideration?

The Nokia 8 Sirocco embraces many new features of the current smartphones. The phone’s display is curved on both ends, giving it the feel of Samsung’s Infinity Display on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9. Nokia has covered 95 per cent of this phone’s body with glass. The phone has its fingerprint scanner on the back. All in all, not only does this phone have all the features a buyer would need in a phone today, it also looks as good as arguably the best-looking device to have come out in the recent times (that being the Samsung Galaxy S8, and now the Galaxy S9).

The Nokia 8 Sirocco has ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack and buyers will get a USB-to-3.5mm adapter in the box (bummer!). It uses a pOLED panel, which was made popular by LG G-Flex range of smartphones. The Android One program ensures that this phone is among the first ones to get the latest Android software updates and security patches as and when they arrive.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is a nice mix of great hardware and sexy looks in one device. As a result, its price tag of Rs 49,999 does not seem exorbitant but rather fitting for a flagship smartphone. For those looking to buy the best, most powerful smartphone available, this one is worth considering. It looks premium, feels premium, and has all the components to make it operate like one.
