There are few Android-based smartphones that can match Apple iPhone X’s mouth-watering price tag. Add the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS to that small list. This phone costs 1,695 euros (Rs 1.34 lakh approx) for 256GB variant and 2,095 euros (Rs 1.69 lakh approx) for 512GB variant. It is Huawei’s top-of-the-line (not flagship like the P20 Pro) smartphone and marks its continued partnership with the Porsche Design. However, the real question is what makes it worth one’s kidneys.

What’s new about Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS?
The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS claims a few firsts to its name. This is the first phone to come with 512GB internal storage space. Crucially, it is also the first phone to sport two fingerprint scanners – one under the screen (another first) and on the back panel. Why it has two fingerprint scanners instead of one is something worth discussing in a bit. What’s worth talking about is its design, which will remind you of the Samsung Galaxy S9 twins/Note 8 devices. This makes the device look and feel premium as well as expensive. The forehead and the chin of the phone are quite small (like Note 8) and the Porsche Design logos on the chin and back panel tell the user that it is a special phone.
A look over the spec sheet further cements this phone’s status as a ultra high-end offering. A 2.36GHz octa-core Kirin 970 (Huawei’s own) processor is mated to an i7 co-processor, Mali-G72 MP12 GPU, Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and 6GB RAM. The phone offers either 256GB or 512GB internal storage space but no expansion option. A 6-inch FullView OLED display with 2K resolution (2880x1440p) and 18:9 aspect ratio can be found on the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS.
The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS runs on Android 8.1 Oreo skinned with EMUI 8.1. The back of the phone consists of a Leica triple camera setup and consists of a 40-megapixel RGB lens with f/1.8 aperture, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens with f/1.6 aperture, and 8-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. This setup includes tricks like PDAF, CAF, Laser, and Depth Auto Focus. It offers 5x hybrid zoom and Huawei AIS (AI image Stabilisation). The front camera on the phone is a 24-megapixel unit with f/2.0 aperture and offers 360-degree Facial Recognition feature.
Connectivity options on the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS include Dual-SIM with dual-LTE, Wi-fi with Wi-fi Direct support, Bluetooth 4.2, USB Type-C, DisplayPort 1.2, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou, and NFC. The phone has been IP67 certified and supports aptX/aptX HD, LDAC HD, and HWA audio codecs. The phone has dual-speaker setup as well that benefit from Dolby Atmos technology. A 4,000mAh battery powers the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS which also offers the company’s proprietary SuperCharge technology and wireless charging.
Is the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS worth consideration?
The Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS features two fingerprint scanners. Apart from unlocking the phone with either option, they also help the user switch between profiles on their smartphone. However, one cannot use them interchangeably for fingerprint reading. The triple rear-camera setup offers 3x optical zoom, 5x lossless hybrid zoom, and 10x digital zoom.
It has 512GB internal storage space which, till date, no other phone has. It is a part of a small list of 2018 phones that have a dual-speaker setup. While the phone does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, it has earphones with USB Type-C port and a USB Type-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter for audiophiles who prefer to use their own headphones/earphones.
Making it more special is the fact that it is among the few phones to offer both fast and wireless charging. The accessories on offer include a leather case, a leather smart view flip case, wireless charger, and USB Type-C earphones (of these, owners get a leather case and earphones along with the phone).
The phone will be available in black and red colours variants. However, the red colour variant will be China-exclusive and the list of countries where the Black colour option will be sold has not been revealed. This means that India may be on the list of countries where it will go on sale.
In front of this phone even the iPhone X seems like a bargain. However, this phone is not like the other phones on the market. Some of the tech on this phone will likely appear on other phones in near future. This phone is worth consideration by tech geeks and regular folk alike because it previews the future of smartphone tech in a way few phones do.
